First, pemmican (mentioned in at least one Zelazny story) is basically dried buffalo meat, fat, and berries, with the possible edition of some nuts. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Atrium/4832/buffalo3.html Second, although I think a month's supply would be good to pick up (via the Castle's siege rations or just an arranged pickup from the Western Lands that make it), the Count would make an arrangement to get more varied food in a week's time - to preserve three weeks of emergency rations, and also to avoid culinary drudgery. Third, I think I see three possibilities for the Caliph's absence: 1) Something else has distracted, delayed or trapped him 2) He's still preparing his assault 3) He's already attacking 'us' somewhere else. The Count's defense against #3 would be to have regular information delivered to him from his home realm, looking for things that might match the what sees as the Caliph's known patterns - rocks fall, giant squids rise from the depths, random explosions, kidnapped mages. Oh, where _are_ the mages that were pressganged? ------ Sam Gorton | Skaion Corporation sgorton@grey-havens.net | (781) 396-1095
