(08:05:21 PM) The topic for #dkap_amber is: Game as usual, logs at https://www.train-wreck.org/~dkap/Amber/logs wiki-wiki at: https://www.rebel.org/wiki/

(08:11:18 PM) Cagliostro: I am probably only good till 10. Early day today and tomorrow.
(08:13:05 PM) dkap: I understand.
(08:13:15 PM) dkap: Mike said he'd be home in a few moments.
(08:13:25 PM) dkap: Haven't heard from Auricle or Anise yay or nay.
(08:13:31 PM) dkap: And Ilk is still MIA.
(08:16:19 PM) Cagliostro: nod.
(08:22:48 PM) Cagliostro: I have just ordered 25 pounds of gaming books.
(08:22:57 PM) Cagliostro: a set of eight Conan and eleven Babylon 5.
(08:23:50 PM) dkap: Most delightful.
(08:24:10 PM) Cagliostro: I have been experimenting with gaming systems.
(08:24:49 PM) Cagliostro: We've had a couple of fairly successful call of cthulhu games and a reasonably good star trek game
(08:25:19 PM) Cagliostro: and we're going to be starting a spelljammer game next week. All using Fudge rules.
(08:25:26 PM) dkap: Cool.
(08:25:44 PM) Cagliostro: so the rules are in flux during the game. But the rules aren't too detailed. ;)
(08:27:58 PM) dkap: Yeah, you were telling me about Fudge a bit ago.
(08:28:27 PM) dkap: Really helps with the rules-lawyers ... but then again, the rules lawyers probably wouldn't consent to Fudge rules.
(08:28:46 PM) Cagliostro: I've de-Fudged it a bit. Using 2d6, for one thing.
(08:28:56 PM) Cagliostro: my local rules lawyer is politely skeptical
(08:29:26 PM) Cagliostro: we've now run one combat with him around, and I fleshed out the combat actions a lot, but his character was a harvard psychologist in a call of cthulhu game so he didn't fight anything
(08:32:37 PM) dkap: Sounds delightful.
(08:32:51 PM) dkap: And sounds vaguely Amberioid.
(08:33:01 PM) caelin [~fircuser@m515e36d0.tmodns.net] entered the room.
(08:33:46 PM) caelin: bleh. i need a task list on this phone.
(08:34:22 PM) caelin: hrm...i wonder if the prompt has top on it.
(08:34:58 PM) dkap: Remember The Milk?
(08:35:48 PM) caelin: eh?
(08:35:53 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
(08:37:00 PM) caelin: D'oh!
(08:38:18 PM) caelin: anyway, rehearsal is done...just down the street from the house
(08:38:41 PM) Cagliostro [~sgorton@c-66-30-2-79.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.

(08:43:09 PM) Cagliostro: brb
(08:44:23 PM) Cagliostr1 [~sgorton@c-66-30-5-155.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(08:46:09 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
(08:46:19 PM) dkap: Take a look at http://www.rememberthemilk.com/
(09:00:24 PM) caelin left the room (quit: Read error: Connection reset by peer).
(09:14:49 PM) Cagliostr1 is now known as Cagliostro
(09:15:43 PM) Caelin [~arkhon@pool-173-48-174-64.bstnma.fios.verizon.net] entered the room.
(09:15:50 PM) Caelin: I live again!
(09:16:30 PM) Cagliostro: woo hoo
(09:16:50 PM) Caelin: Well, good news online...not necessarily in game...
(09:19:05 PM) dkap: Oh?
(09:19:18 PM) Caelin: That Caelin is alive? ;-)
(09:20:23 PM) Caelin: Anyway...
(09:22:04 PM) Auricle [~chatzilla@c-71-192-210-192.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:22:12 PM) Auricle: hi
(09:22:42 PM) Cagliostro: hello!
(09:22:49 PM) Caelin: Ho ho ho!
(09:23:29 PM) dkap: Right then.
(09:24:24 PM) Auricle: hi
(09:24:50 PM) dkap: Why is it that no matter how deeply the hook is sent, my new players always want to go in an ... unanticipated directions.
(09:25:12 PM) Auricle: PCs. What can you do?
(09:25:15 PM) Caelin: Because we live in FEAR of the plot of the game.
(09:26:12 PM) Cagliostro: because if they didn't, they wouldn't play Amber.
(09:27:02 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(09:27:24 PM) dkap: And I haven't been their GM for long enough for me to understand where they are predictable, as to yet.
(09:29:27 PM) Auricle: Mmmm. unpredictability.
(09:32:30 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(09:44:52 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
(09:44:53 PM) Cagliostr1 [~sgorton@c-66-30-5-155.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:49:20 PM) Cagliostr1 left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
(09:49:35 PM) Cagliostro [~sgorton@c-66-30-5-155.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:49:39 PM) Auricle left the room (quit: Read error: Connection reset by peer).
(09:53:27 PM) dkap: As unpredictable as bing in this room.
(09:54:52 PM) Caelin: LOl
(09:55:28 PM) dkap: So ... when last we left ... Caelin was standing around, about to contemplate the inevitable.
(09:55:50 PM) dkap: There was an attack drawing Zach, Auricle and Cagliostro, both together and apart.
(09:56:12 PM) Cagliostro: that is true
(09:56:39 PM) Caelin: Caelin was contemplating what to do in event of big honking hand...or whatever absconding device came along.
(09:57:33 PM) dkap: And Cagloistro, you were contemplating escape mechanisms.
(09:59:11 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Ping timeout).
(10:04:35 PM) dkap: Any result to the contemplation?
(10:04:59 PM) Caelin: Yes. Caelin will hold plans until the shit hits the fan.
(10:05:04 PM) Cagliostro [~sgorton@c-66-30-5-155.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(10:05:58 PM) dkap: And not use the combined Laetatio and Benedict distraction to get the flock out of there?
(10:06:08 PM) dkap: To someplace hopefully void-proof?
(10:06:20 PM) dkap: Now that you know it's the void, as opposed to actually magic?
(10:06:45 PM) Caelin: Okay.
(10:07:14 PM) Caelin: When I tried to shadow shift before, the others in the wedding party were not physically touching me, were they?
(10:09:18 PM) Caelin: Also, if the attack is from the void, is it a safe conclusion that the Fringe may already be compromised? Or does Caelin have any clue if the Fringe is accessible from the void still?
(10:12:51 PM) dkap: No clue, to either of them.
(10:13:50 PM) ***Caelin turns to the Ifrit. "Hold my hands...I'm going to try and walk us to a common vantage point, from which we can gate to a safer locale."
(10:16:22 PM) dkap: You are, indeed, capable of walking shadow, but they are not capable of being brought with you, and now, you are more tired than you have been in a while.
(10:16:42 PM) Caelin: Am I being drained?
(10:17:20 PM) dkap: No, but it's taking a lot of ... energy ... not the magical kind, to actually continue to use a defunct pattern.
(10:17:50 PM) Caelin: Gate back from this point in shadow to them.
(10:18:43 PM) dkap: You still don't know where "there" is ...
(10:18:57 PM) dkap: Nor do you know where "here" is.
(10:19:08 PM) Caelin: huh? I was just there.
(10:19:46 PM) Caelin: I should know in shadow where I just was if I walked FROM there. No?
(10:20:04 PM) Caelin: If not, I'm not at all sure how I ever got to fix any locations in mind at all.
(10:20:06 PM) dkap: Not unless you expended special effort to figure out where "there" was.
(10:20:31 PM) dkap: Usually by pulling all the tags magically, getting the "name" of the shadow.
(10:20:39 PM) Caelin: Ahh.
(10:20:45 PM) Caelin: okay.
(10:21:04 PM) Caelin: IS there any magic anywhere to be sucked in?
(10:21:13 PM) dkap: It's you. Of course there is.
(10:22:07 PM) Caelin: Worry about that in a second. Walk back. Yes, I know it's tiring. Can I make it back?
(10:25:09 PM) dkap: You make it back.
(10:25:38 PM) Cagliostro: as promised, I must turn into a pumpkin
(10:25:46 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Quit: Leaving.).
(10:27:18 PM) Caelin: The Ifrit have bibliomantic tokens, yes?
(10:29:31 PM) dkap: They do.
(10:29:39 PM) dkap: Sleep well, Sam.
(10:30:48 PM) Caelin: "If we fall under attack, you may choose to use them. At present, I'm going to attempt to mark this area so I can open a magic gate. My signature, as has been noted realitywide, is not subtle."
(10:31:23 PM) dkap: Both the Ifrit raise shields.
(10:31:39 PM) ***Caelin starts to suck in magic.
(10:32:30 PM) Caelin: Let's find the name to this place.
(10:33:22 PM) dkap: You pull in magic. There is just the hint of a sigh from somewhere deep in your mind.
(10:33:47 PM) ***Caelin curses.
(10:33:57 PM) dkap: And you now know the name of this place, so you can tell the Ifrit, and the can open a gate from here to either Thelbane or the entrance of the Fringe.
(10:34:08 PM) Caelin: Give the Ifrit the name. Now.
(10:43:22 PM) dkap: Right. They want to know where you wish them to take you.
(10:43:58 PM) dkap: Right ... Thelbane-wards.
(10:50:24 PM) Caelin: ...
(10:50:27 PM) Caelin: right
(10:57:23 PM) Caelin: And what happens?
(11:00:38 PM) dkap: Sorry ... distracted.
(11:00:45 PM) Caelin: No problem.
(11:01:00 PM) dkap: You go through the gate, and get to Thelbane.
(11:01:49 PM) Caelin: Manuever to the big 'ol door and knock, or use whatever protocol needed to get in, to safety as soon as possible, with the Ifrit.
(11:05:31 PM) dkap: You are in, with the Ifrit.
(11:06:01 PM) ***Caelin sigh in slight relief.
(11:06:11 PM) Caelin: Are the others in the wedding party here?
(11:06:29 PM) Caelin: or did they make it to the Fringe?
(11:08:26 PM) dkap: Nope, not here.
(11:08:47 PM) Caelin: "Well, we can only hope at this point that we're safe.
(11:12:05 PM) dkap: Yeah, safe.
(11:12:07 PM) dkap: Umm ...
(11:12:37 PM) Caelin: For cataclysmic values of safe. Not political.
(11:12:46 PM) Caelin: Now, about that political...
(11:13:08 PM) dkap: Yeah, and you get to catch up with your House Second, who has been hanging out here.
(11:13:27 PM) ***Caelin sighs in relief, and greets his house second.
(11:14:48 PM) Caelin: "Anything of news, sir?"
(11:15:00 PM) Caelin: "Besides impending cataclysm, of course..."
(11:16:02 PM) dkap: Not much.
(11:16:07 PM) dkap: What cataclysm?
(11:16:17 PM) ***Caelin o_O
(11:16:35 PM) Caelin: "You mean to tell me you know nothing of my mother's arrival in this reality?
(11:16:43 PM) dkap: Was I supposed to?
(11:17:18 PM) dkap: And what is wrong with a visit from your mother?
(11:17:56 PM) Caelin: "Considering her master plan is apparently to capture me and have me do her bidding or something to that effect, and that she likely already has captured the general defending the house, a few members, including my intended fiancee.
(11:20:05 PM) dkap: And why hasn't anyone come to tell me about it?
(11:20:19 PM) dkap: I mean, I _am_ the house second, and all.
(11:20:37 PM) Caelin: "We sent several messages here. Apparently none arrived."
(11:21:06 PM) Caelin: "Which means that messages from me are likely ALL getting picked off."
(11:21:25 PM) Caelin: "We instructed you to remain here, as it appeared safe. It proved later that it was."
(11:21:36 PM) dkap: Probably. Perhaps we should start contacting them in person, to make sure that your messages are getting through.
(11:21:41 PM) dkap: Who else was on the list?
(11:21:44 PM) Caelin: "IN fact, the attacks appear to be coming from the void, so here is a good place to be."
(11:22:00 PM) Caelin: "Of current captives?"
(11:22:33 PM) dkap: Of people that needed to be informed.
(11:22:41 PM) dkap: I mean, we should rush right out to them, and inform them.
(11:23:48 PM) dkap: Come on, no time to waste. We can figure out who, along the way.
(11:23:57 PM) Caelin: "No.
(11:24:16 PM) dkap: No really ... let's go. Right now ... umm ... trust me on this?
(11:24:34 PM) Caelin: "The enemy (mom) has proven to be able to kidnap from any point that isn't Thelbane."
(11:24:37 PM) dkap: (You are noticing that he doesn't seem to ... well ... be himself at the moment)
(11:24:48 PM) Caelin: "Hrm..."
(11:24:59 PM) Caelin: "You are under orders to remain here, where it is safe."
(11:25:05 PM) Caelin: "Stop for a moment."
(11:25:05 PM) dkap: "Come on, Didn't you just say she has Benedict? He's probably distracting her."
(11:25:26 PM) Caelin: "Benedict wasn't captured, per se."
(11:25:49 PM) Caelin: "The hand attacked our party, and he took to dismantling it, but not before it retreated, with him in tow.
(11:26:21 PM) dkap: (You never said Benedict, just The General)
(11:26:35 PM) Caelin: "Yes, the general, being Benedict."
(11:27:27 PM) dkap: (if he didn't know anything how did he know the General was Benedict?)
(11:28:09 PM) Caelin: (hm!)
(11:28:36 PM) Caelin: "One moment. You just reminded me of some business I've to tend to with the Ifrit."
(11:28:49 PM) Caelin: Go to the Ifrit, back turned.
(11:29:08 PM) dkap: "Of course. Consult with them, and then, we can be on our way. Maybe leave one behind, to coordinate things, from here?
(11:29:20 PM) Caelin: (It IS my house second, yes? He has the ring?)
(11:30:11 PM) dkap: He doesn't seem to be wearing it, at the moment, no. He does _look_ a lot like you/your house second, though.
(11:31:10 PM) Caelin: CAn I ping via house ring? I believe I've done it or something similar before.
(11:31:33 PM) dkap: Of course, you can't seem to take off _your_ ring. But he might be able to. Maybe he thought it inappropriate to wear here, in Thelbane, the seat of government?
(11:31:38 PM) dkap: Yes you have.
(11:31:53 PM) Caelin: Ping house second via my ring.
(11:32:09 PM) dkap: And your ping gets no local response (it wouldn't pass beyond the walls of Thelbane, if you were inside it, and he wasn't though, or vice versa)
(11:33:35 PM) Caelin: To one of the Ifrit, "I have a message to deliver to my grandmother informing him of General Benedict's likely demise, please read before conveying it through whatever means you have..."
(11:34:37 PM) Caelin: Write the message, "That is NOT my house second. Impostor. Doesn't have the ring. Or he is critically compromised. Options?" And hand it to the Ifrit.
(11:34:54 PM) dkap: He holds out his hand for the message, with a cock to his head, that is _very_ reminicant of the count.
(11:35:18 PM) ***Caelin smiles.
(11:36:47 PM) dkap: The Ifrit with the message goes toward the door, the other ifrit moves between you and the House Second. Just as the first Ifrit reaches the door, he passes a simple sleep-spell back at the alleged House Second.
(11:37:31 PM) dkap: The (now more) alleged house second doesn't blow up, and uses a magical gesture to dismiss the magic. There are no bibliomantic/magic explosions.
(11:37:53 PM) dkap: The ifrit between you and the house second gates out, and grabs you on the way.
(11:38:05 PM) Caelin: Throw a free bibliomantic token at him.
(11:38:39 PM) Caelin: And HyperZAP the token once within range of his person with the stored magic.
(11:38:57 PM) dkap: The Gate Out fails to go where expected, because you are in Thelbane, but it does bring you down to the dungeons, instead of up in the main room, or wherever the gate was primed to go.
(11:39:36 PM) dkap: You are only slightly hit by the shrapnel of the exploding blibliomantic token.
(11:39:57 PM) dkap: And you saw his shape start to fray when you were gated out.
(11:40:19 PM) dkap: (And your house second is neither a shape-shifter nor a beast-master)
(11:40:52 PM) Caelin: I was gated out?
(11:40:58 PM) Caelin: By whom or what?
(11:40:59 PM) dkap: The dungeon guard comes up to you, and says "What, you again?"
(11:41:07 PM) dkap: (By the Ifrit.)
(11:41:12 PM) Caelin: Ahh, good.
(11:41:30 PM) Caelin: "Safety measure. Thelbane had been compromised by an impostor."
(11:42:19 PM) dkap: Dungeon guard: Nope. No impostors enter or exit Thelbane. They are themselves. If others don't know who they are, Thelbane always knows.
(11:42:36 PM) dkap: Dungeon guard: "But often Thelbane doesn't care."
(11:42:55 PM) Caelin: "yes. Evidently Thelbane didn't care. And it should have."
(11:43:27 PM) Caelin: How familiar looking is the dungeon guard?
(11:43:40 PM) dkap: Ifrit: Perhaps, we should change location, in case the gate is traced?
(11:43:54 PM) ***Caelin nods. "Good idea."
(11:43:58 PM) dkap: Same guy there when you got the Randoms out.
(11:44:05 PM) Caelin: Good.
(11:47:02 PM) ***Caelin will follow the Ifrit to a new location.
(11:48:00 PM) dkap: Ifrit: Being that you know this place, and I do not, perhaps ... you should lead?
(11:49:07 PM) ***Caelin nods. "Deeper in, we should proceed, methinks."
(11:50:06 PM) dkap: Ifrit: Right, which means that's the wrong direction to go in, and therefore, we should do it, because no sane strategist would expect it.
(11:50:54 PM) ***Caelin smiles, and starts walking, in the direction of the cell that held the Randoms.
(11:51:43 PM) dkap: The dragon that inhabits you manafests.
(11:51:49 PM) dkap: The Ifrit ducks.
(11:52:16 PM) Caelin: Great. A leftover.
(11:52:23 PM) Caelin: Black council?
(11:52:42 PM) dkap: Nope, fairie dragon, remember?
(11:52:52 PM) Caelin: Oh, thank the gods...
(11:53:22 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(11:53:25 PM) ***Caelin shifts as though he was about to faint, but then regains composure.
(11:53:55 PM) Caelin: "You REALLY need to find better timing when you manifest."
(11:54:06 PM) dkap: Dragon: Hey! We're here again. Will you quit it? You promised all of us save inabitable spots, and you keep kicking me out of mine.
(11:54:17 PM) Caelin: "What?"
(11:54:25 PM) Caelin: "I haven't kicked you out of anything."
(11:54:37 PM) Caelin: I forget, was it a null field or something that kind of kicked him out of me?
(11:56:13 PM) dkap: (Indeed, the function of the dungeon. There was a line you crossed, and that's when he got kicked out last time, as well.)
(11:56:54 PM) Caelin: "Sorry. Null field. We're here for our own protection. This is now one of the few safe areas we know of, anywhere in reality."
(11:57:18 PM) dkap: the dragon snorts.
(11:57:31 PM) dkap: Safe my scaley but.
(03/11/2009 12:00:03 AM) Caelin: "You have no idea."
(12:02:06 AM) dkap: Dragon: Well ... probably not. But if you don't soon allow me to re-inhabit, you might be overrun by mice.
(12:02:17 AM) Caelin: "..."
(12:02:48 AM) Caelin: "I promise, you will get the chance to...re-inhabit...soon."
(12:03:29 AM) ***Caelin kind of sinks at the use of 're-inhabit', and comes to a stunning conclusion, and curses. Again.
(12:03:36 AM) Caelin: (We should hang here)
(12:03:58 AM) dkap: We should.
(12:04:35 AM) dkap: Until later, when our intrepid heros, once again, find deeds of Derring-Do to dare to do.
(12:04:50 AM) dkap: And Dom Seriol ... what? That's not this story? RIght ...
(12:05:01 AM) Caelin: Ha!
(12:05:23 AM) Caelin: With that, good night.
(12:05:24 AM) Caelin left the room.
