(08:23:16 PM) The topic for #dkap_amber is: Game as usual, logs at https://www.train-wreck.org/~dkap/Amber/logs wiki-wiki at: https://www.rebel.org/wiki/
(08:23:34 PM) Caelin: yo!
(08:25:09 PM) mode (+o dkap) by ChanServ
(08:25:29 PM) dkap: Hihi!
(08:26:35 PM) Caelin: the count is getting food, I believe, but should be back soon.
(08:28:42 PM) Cagliostro: I am back
(08:28:56 PM) dkap: Excellent!
(08:29:01 PM) dkap: No in person folks yet.
(08:29:14 PM) dkap: Although I'm on the phone with my mother, so I'm slightly distracted ...
(08:29:23 PM) Caelin: gotcha
(08:29:27 PM) Cagliostro: Understandable
(08:29:37 PM) Cagliostro: is the vampire last week 'Delna'? No tsure of the spelling.
(08:29:43 PM) Cagliostro: I do have a log to finish fleshing out and mail around.
(08:31:42 PM) Cagliostr1 [~sgorton@c-66-30-5-155.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(08:31:51 PM) Cagliostr1: laptop'n
(08:31:59 PM) Caelin: got it.
(08:32:11 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Quit: Leaving.).
(08:34:25 PM) dkap: Delna is correct.
(08:34:39 PM) Cagliostr1: excellent.
(08:34:44 PM) Cagliostr1 is now known as Cagliostro
(08:46:27 PM) dkap: And the logs from last week (with my notes) should be up, yes?
(08:47:04 PM) Cagliostro: not sure
(08:47:13 PM) Cagliostro: the chat logs from last week are basically me pestering Auricle about Spot.
(08:48:14 PM) Caelin: LOL
(08:52:57 PM) dkap: Yes, but I put the notes at the end of it, before saving it.
(08:54:29 PM) dkap: Apparently, they did not get up. They are up now.
(08:54:40 PM) dkap: And apparently, my mom is going back to Italy.
(08:54:51 PM) Caelin: will read soon.
(08:56:47 PM) dkap: Of course.
(08:57:00 PM) dkap: Just the last lines, and probably need some amplification.
(08:57:09 PM) dkap: But we haven't yet heard from Auricle?
(08:57:33 PM) Caelin: hrm...
(08:58:00 PM) Cagliostro: I sent a ping.
(08:59:25 PM) Cagliostro: She is ill and has been these past two days
(08:59:36 PM) Cagliostro: so she might show up in channel, but should not be expected to be too coherent
(09:00:18 PM) dkap: Ahh ... got it.
(09:00:19 PM) Caelin: oops.
(09:01:31 PM) dkap: Apparently she caught spot, as opposed to being able to think about spot.
(09:01:38 PM) dkap: (Sick as a dog ... never mind.)
(09:02:53 PM) Caelin: eep.
(09:03:14 PM) Cagliostro: game comma run
(09:03:38 PM) dkap: Right ... So ... when last we left our debacle ...
(09:03:48 PM) dkap: Is there anything the Count needs for our trip back in time?
(09:04:03 PM) Cagliostro: can't think of anything
(09:04:07 PM) dkap: Background information, pieces of clue, history, anything?
(09:04:19 PM) Cagliostro: are there just the sanguinarians who need resettlement?
(09:04:26 PM) Cagliostro: or were there others?
(09:04:54 PM) dkap: Sanguine, puppies, and mages.
(09:05:24 PM) Caelin: what?? we're down to just one debacle?
(09:05:47 PM) Cagliostro: so are the others being resettled in the same territory?
(09:05:56 PM) dkap: I'm just waiting for them to discover that the Worm here ... really doesn't exist (it's on a Kraken) and they _really_ don't want to get in touch with the local weaver equivalent.
(09:06:37 PM) dkap: Do you want them so settled? The Vamps already realized that one castle is not going to be sufficient ...
(09:07:01 PM) Cagliostro: I was thinking that would be imprudent
(09:07:22 PM) Cagliostro: but I was checking to see if there was continuity to the contrary ;)
(09:07:45 PM) Cagliostro: werewolves probably need some semideserted area with forest?
(09:07:46 PM) dkap: Not as to yet.
(09:07:57 PM) Cagliostro: and mage requirements were defined as...?
(09:08:03 PM) dkap: Probably would be good. Some section that is ... less groomed than most of the world.
(09:08:41 PM) dkap: And the few mages that made it across, I just presumed you would want to test/feel out and then settle inside your organization somewhere.
(09:08:55 PM) dkap: Having a mage with different points of view on how reality works, sometimes helps.
(09:09:03 PM) Cagliostro: the feeling out process is likely to be quite long
(09:09:11 PM) dkap: The whole "different box" thinking approach.
(09:09:12 PM) Cagliostro: but I do have a number of organizations that could make use of them.
(09:09:17 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(09:09:49 PM) dkap: Although, the magic-using Vamps are going to be somewhat ... disappointed.
(09:10:18 PM) dkap: And the human mages, since their world no longer exists ... are having a debate (no action taken yet) about paradox, and if it still applies, and if so, under what ruleset.
(09:10:45 PM) Caelin: magic went away?
(09:10:46 PM) Cagliostro: hard to answer that question without determining local static reality
(09:11:56 PM) dkap: Well ... being that they now live under Faith's ruleset ... paradox has a ... very different feel.
(09:12:10 PM) dkap: And she accommodated her rules to your view on magic ...
(09:12:42 PM) dkap: So the union of both sets are available, but the mages don't have any way to even discover what that is, much less how it functions, without guidance from someone who is already familiar.
(09:12:49 PM) Caelin: heh.
(09:13:04 PM) dkap: Unlike Caelin, they can't just force their magical rules to "work here".
(09:14:12 PM) Caelin: What? No batteries?
(09:14:58 PM) dkap: Even if they had batteries, and some idea how to hook up to them, from their old world, the batteries might now be putting out some form of AC instead of DC ...
(09:15:52 PM) dkap: There is definitely power there (Faith and the Count pretty much make that proof-positive)
(09:19:26 PM) dkap: But how they address the power.
(09:19:54 PM) Cagliostro: so what do I know about the puppies other than they like ungroomed areas?
(09:20:03 PM) dkap: Caelin, when you use your name-based magic, because who you are, and how you do things, things all of a sudden obey their names, even if they didn't even know they had names, until you named them ...
(09:20:27 PM) ***Caelin nods.
(09:21:43 PM) dkap: These mages? Were they to try to use name magic, in a place you have never been, it would be like ... umm ... like Sparrowhawk and Vetch out beyond the reefs that are Earthsea, and not overly surprised that the fish don't leap into their nets, the speculation that the fish are ignorant of their names, or, possibly that the pair of them are ignorant of the fishes names ... was bantered about.
(09:22:37 PM) dkap: What do you know about the puppies? Umm ... not much, beyond that they just sacrificed everything they could, to keep the armageddon from happening, and it happened anyway, and they were still trying to fight the tide up until their last.
(09:23:58 PM) Cagliostro: okay.
(09:24:10 PM) Cagliostro: do I know that they are protectors by nature?
(09:24:14 PM) Cagliostro: and somewhat violent?
(09:25:53 PM) dkap: You know they are supposed to be protectors of nature.
(09:26:13 PM) dkap: You know they are war machines, or have built themselves over into war machines, in the name of protecting nature.
(09:28:10 PM) Cagliostro: I can see two possibilities
(09:29:03 PM) Cagliostro: Folkvang, which is pretty remote and has native peoples who live in pretty close harmony with the land and reindeer herds.
(09:29:08 PM) dkap: And, also, you have been warned that the "nature" that they are theoretically tied to, has died.
(09:29:29 PM) dkap: So they might go a touch crazy.
(09:29:51 PM) Cagliostro: And one of the Khazar successor states, which is more in flux than Folkvang and also needs protecting more.
(09:30:09 PM) Cagliostro: ah, see, when I asked about our assets, you should have listed that. ;)
(09:30:30 PM) dkap: Well ... there is also the wheelbarrow that the albino was using ...
(09:31:10 PM) Cagliostro: so if I have a communication mechanism, I will check to see whether they'd prefer to have two options
(09:31:14 PM) Cagliostro: and set up a resettlement plan
(09:32:03 PM) Cagliostro: then check in on them, and see how they're coping in a physical and metaphysical sense.
(09:32:14 PM) dkap: For just a moment, I had this image of tasking them with reforesting the Sahara ...
(09:35:13 PM) Cagliostro: I'm not trying to make significant climactic alterations. quite the opposite.
(09:36:17 PM) dkap: Hence "for just a moment".
(09:36:56 PM) dkap: The whole "reconnect to the environment, and re-find your center" thing that monks often give to their accolites ...
(09:37:59 PM) Cagliostro: yes, but "pound sand" is not the best thing to tell werewolves.
(09:38:08 PM) Cagliostro: what's the rough count for puppies and mages?
(09:38:18 PM) Cagliostro: and any fey or other supers? or are they hiding as mages?
(09:38:35 PM) dkap: No fey, Titania took care of them.
(09:38:39 PM) dkap: Supers?
(09:39:10 PM) dkap: Wraiths were tied to the places destroyed.
(09:41:15 PM) dkap: I have no idea what Supers are ...
(09:41:32 PM) Cagliostro: supernaturals
(09:42:01 PM) Cagliostro: mummies, gypsies, demons, gods, whatevertheheyelse they have
(09:42:35 PM) dkap: No mummies.
(09:42:44 PM) dkap: Gypsies ... well ... that's just a culture.
(09:42:55 PM) dkap: (and you have Rom in your culture, as well)
(09:43:23 PM) dkap: Demons ... well ... most of them were on the Armageddon side, and were not rescued.
(09:43:56 PM) dkap: Gods, if folks are being worshiped ... they might not have realized it, and, unless their worshipers got rescued, they are probably already toast.
(09:44:05 PM) dkap: And the other bits? I have no idea.
(09:46:53 PM) Cagliostro: just checking. it doesn't have to be sketched out in detail, mostly just checking for other groups.
(09:47:21 PM) dkap: Right ... I don't _think_ there are other groups.
(09:47:27 PM) Cagliostro: no worries.
(09:47:28 PM) dkap: Although that cup is ... marvelous!
(09:47:41 PM) Cagliostro: glad that it's popular.
(09:48:34 PM) Cagliostro: so I think we have a rough ~100 count for sanguinarians
(09:49:20 PM) Cagliostro: do we have a rough estimate for furries and mages?
(09:50:04 PM) dkap: About 150 all told, the rest have yet to arrive.
(09:50:22 PM) dkap: There are 60-ish puppies (although, one is close to littering ...)
(09:50:32 PM) dkap: And you have, I believe, 8 mages.
(09:53:39 PM) dkap: And the litter might be ... interesting, because it is of a glass-walker and a Red Talon.
(09:53:48 PM) dkap: So, metis all the way.
(09:54:04 PM) dkap: Most probably. I've not thought about how I'm going to handle it, though.
(09:54:33 PM) Cagliostro: interesting.
(09:54:52 PM) dkap: Suggestions are welcome.
(09:55:46 PM) Cagliostro: so it might be two packs of thirty-odd werewolves, plus some lone wolves.
(09:57:03 PM) dkap: Actually, it's the remains of about 7 different packs.
(09:57:17 PM) dkap: Sorry 17, not 7.
(09:57:31 PM) dkap: So pack dynamics are a bit ... unstable.
(09:57:39 PM) Caelin: what is this?
(09:58:12 PM) dkap: And most of the die-hard loyalists (the Silver Talons, the Get etc) all were too busy fighting to accept the offer of escape.
(09:58:45 PM) dkap: Remember, these were wolves who abandoned their final stand.
(09:59:48 PM) Cagliostro: yep.
(09:59:55 PM) Cagliostro: they'll repack, and probably sort into a couple of caerns
(10:00:03 PM) Cagliostro: not that I know anything about caerns
(10:00:50 PM) dkap: Nor they, because, unless you want to add puppies to your history, there are no sacred places for them to caern up around.
(10:00:53 PM) Cagliostro: caelin: there are refugees from a white wolf universe (possibly the same one that the original pack came from)
(10:01:16 PM) Cagliostro: well, they're looking for power nodes
(10:01:19 PM) dkap: Several white-wolf universes, all mixed together ...
(10:01:31 PM) Cagliostro: there's a conflict between mages and werewolves.
(10:02:47 PM) Cagliostro: Niagara Falls, for instance, was originally a werewolf caern that was raided by the technocracy and taken over and dammed up
(10:02:56 PM) dkap: There is always a conflict between wolves and mages, wolves and vamps, and wolves and humans.
(10:03:01 PM) Cagliostro: I've got a picture of the statue of Tesla they build there. ;)
(10:03:09 PM) dkap: Most cool!
(10:03:38 PM) Caelin: awesome!
(10:04:55 PM) Cagliostro: yes, but mages and werewolves compete for quintessence-rich places. werewolves prey on leeches because of the wyrm-taint, and vampires are paranoid about lupines. And in a city, all three compete for control and resources.
(10:05:47 PM) dkap: And, how are you balancing all of that? Are you keeping them all seperate?
(10:06:52 PM) Cagliostro: I'm not enforcing separation
(10:07:40 PM) Cagliostro: but I'll set them up with some level of distance
(10:08:36 PM) dkap: Will you warn the mages in wherever the resettlement area you choose for the wolves?
(10:08:59 PM) dkap: Will you "strongly suggest" bounds for the wolves territory?
(10:09:39 PM) Cagliostro: I'll certainly warn any power groups I know about and am connected with
(10:10:00 PM) Cagliostro: but I figure with a low-level civil war going on, there are probably some places to put them without too much of a problem
(10:12:20 PM) Cagliostro: wolf territory... I'd like to put them in someplace fairly isolated
(10:12:29 PM) Cagliostro: with some natural borders
(10:13:38 PM) Cagliostro: I don't want to enforce boundaries right away, they'd probably get their hair up and I'd have to set up an alpha relationship or something
(10:13:42 PM) dkap: Back to looking at the Stepps, or the Tundra, or Nonavit?
(10:13:43 PM) Cagliostro: and I'd prefer to avoid that
(10:14:13 PM) Cagliostro: I'm thinking more mountains and rivers. Something on the far side of the Urals.
(10:14:22 PM) dkap: Or, perhaps, you could create (have Ilk create) and alternative garden spot, like yours, just elsewhere?
(10:16:00 PM) Cagliostro: something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Komi_Forests
(10:16:15 PM) Cagliostro: wouldn't occur to Cagliostro
(10:16:24 PM) Cagliostro: it would be like littering around Faythe's place.
(10:17:04 PM) Cagliostro: so something like that but in the mountains and heading to the east
(10:17:30 PM) dkap: Ahh ... actually, having poachers they can (explicitly) chase, might give them a purpose, which they might need.
(10:17:49 PM) dkap: Also, don't forget, there are glasswalkers, not just red talons in the mix. And a few bone-gnawers as well.
(10:18:12 PM) Cagliostro: I presume there is someone who will -tell- me this, though?
(10:18:38 PM) Cagliostro: Since Cagliostro doesn't run a white wolf game, I had to check to see what I knew, and you said they liked ungroomed areas...
(10:20:00 PM) dkap: Yes, the resettlement team from Norton will help you with some of it.
(10:20:09 PM) dkap: And I'm not sure they know, entirely, either.
(10:20:25 PM) Cagliostro: so there may need to be a pushback that not just rural areas are what's looked for.
(10:20:36 PM) Cagliostro: I might put the Folkvang crew not far from a city, then
(10:20:55 PM) Cagliostro: and sort the more urban folks into the less confrontational crew
(10:21:08 PM) Cagliostro: but yes, if poachers happen to go missing, that's within the bounds of acceptable behavior
(10:22:14 PM) dkap: Hrm ... what's the area like, around Alberta ...
(10:23:06 PM) Cagliostro: Alberta's the size of Texas ;)
(10:23:17 PM) Cagliostro: it's both boreal forest and prarie
(10:24:36 PM) dkap: If I recall correctly the boreal forest might be good for the wolves who are more wyld, and there are cities in Alberta that might be comfortable enough for the poodles, I mean bone-gnawers, and the weavers, I mean glass-walkers.
(10:25:49 PM) Cagliostro: I think you are forgetting that this is not earth...
(10:25:55 PM) Cagliostro: and Alberta is not quite the same.
(10:26:12 PM) dkap: Ahh ... right.
(10:26:13 PM) Cagliostro: and I don't think there's any particular reason that Cagliostro would have contacts in Alberta
(10:26:14 PM) dkap: I do forget.
(10:26:27 PM) Cagliostro: I do tell; you very rarely use any of the local terms
(10:26:33 PM) dkap: I was just trying to think of places that might suit, here ... and was looking for analogues.
(10:26:37 PM) Cagliostro: which is OK, as long as you realize we are talking about analogs
(10:26:44 PM) dkap: The colonies never broke off, did they?
(10:26:56 PM) Cagliostro: they never really got established
(10:27:02 PM) Cagliostro: not past city-states
(10:27:23 PM) Cagliostro: with magic, and magical cures for diseases, the history of the new world goes very differently
(10:27:48 PM) Cagliostro: and aztec blood magic is a match for the conquistadors, although it was disruptive because of the mythology so the old social structure did not hold.
(10:27:54 PM) dkap: So, perhaps a shaman or two can be petitioned to allow some "living wolf-spirits" to share their land?
(10:28:02 PM) Cagliostro: yes, but... why?
(10:28:13 PM) Cagliostro: Why would Cagliostro put them in the new world?
(10:28:23 PM) Cagliostro: I don't want to spread them -too- far apart
(10:28:40 PM) Cagliostro: since they're all from the same place, and there is potential conflict.
(10:28:41 PM) dkap: To keep them far away from the vamps, and the problems they would create with friction, until they found their niche?
(10:28:52 PM) Cagliostro: Norway to Switzerland isn't far enough?
(10:29:21 PM) Cagliostro: Nobody's going to be taking over entire nation-states on my watch
(10:30:22 PM) Cagliostro: Nothing that Cagliostro has heard so far says "Don't put them on the same continent as each other".
(10:30:25 PM) dkap: And those beautifully sculpted fijords.
(10:34:51 PM) Caelin: heh.
(10:34:56 PM) Cagliostro: They've got fur coats. Hopefully they're fine with winter.
(10:35:06 PM) Cagliostro: And if they aren't that far from me, it's easier to keep track of them.
(10:35:43 PM) Cagliostro: I haven't even defined the cultures in the canadian praries or pacific northwest
(10:35:43 PM) dkap: That's true as well.
(10:35:59 PM) dkap: So, no need to burden them.
(10:36:14 PM) Cagliostro: indeed.
(10:37:23 PM) Cagliostro: are the mages allied, internally in conflict...
(10:38:32 PM) Cagliostro: or what?
(10:39:53 PM) dkap: Individuals, all standing against the technocracy.
(10:40:01 PM) dkap: Umm ... not allied.
(10:40:41 PM) dkap: Most of the ones who were strong and/or creative enough, broke out into Chaos, and decided to make that (or the surrounding areas) their homes. At whatever cost. We should see a high attrition rate amongst them but ...
(10:41:27 PM) dkap: These were the ones fighting against the technocracy, not necessarily because they had purpose, but because it seemed right, and it interfered with their lives.
(10:41:37 PM) dkap: More nebishes than dark overloards.
(10:41:57 PM) ***Caelin snorts.
(10:43:32 PM) Cagliostro: so could they be safely tucked in a single city, and trusted to work together, at least initially?
(10:45:20 PM) dkap: Sure.
(10:45:39 PM) dkap: Currently they are acting the little-old-ladies, scared of the ground off their porch.
(10:45:52 PM) dkap: At some point they will get up the gumption to experiment ...
(10:46:04 PM) Cagliostro: experiment.
(10:46:04 PM) Cagliostro: hm.
(10:46:12 PM) Cagliostro: perhaps not 'city', then?
(10:46:18 PM) Cagliostro: what's their preferred environment?
(10:46:21 PM) Cagliostro: small town?
(10:46:32 PM) Cagliostro: and is language or culture an issue?
(10:46:46 PM) dkap: They are ... Americans, all ...
(10:50:00 PM) Caelin left the room (quit: Read error: EOF from client).
(10:50:16 PM) Caelin [~arkhon@pool-96-233-2-49.bstnma.east.verizon.net] entered the room.
(10:50:28 PM) Caelin: And back.
(10:51:33 PM) Cagliostro: hm, so their culture has rather vanished.
(10:51:44 PM) dkap: It has.
(10:51:45 PM) Cagliostro: are they only able to speak English?
(10:51:55 PM) Cagliostro: or can they magic their way around that?
(10:52:05 PM) dkap: They speak latin as well.
(10:52:14 PM) dkap: And they might be able to magic their way around it ...
(10:52:35 PM) Cagliostro: I was thinking of putting them in Al-Andalus
(10:52:44 PM) Cagliostro: the local equivalent of Spain.
(10:53:03 PM) Cagliostro: which uses both a local-latinish-Spanish and Arabic.
(10:53:18 PM) dkap: That might work nicely. There is a long tradition of scholarship there ...
(10:53:25 PM) Cagliostro: that's what I was thinking.
(10:53:32 PM) dkap: And the effort to learn the local language will build connections for them.
(10:53:54 PM) Cagliostro: and some quiet country areas for thsoe who want it, for experimentation.
(10:53:57 PM) dkap: Perhaps, a "rented" local guide who will both help them resettle, and suriptitiously babysit them?
(10:56:57 PM) Cagliostro: possibly, if it looks like they have control issue
(10:56:58 PM) Cagliostro: s
(10:59:11 PM) dkap: Of course.
(10:59:34 PM) dkap: But said local guide might also be the one to help them with the language, as well, so ... they might confide in him or her.
(10:59:50 PM) dkap: And then you could know more, and know if they would be/how they would be useful to you.
(11:00:43 PM) Cagliostro: yes
(11:01:13 PM) Cagliostro: and a guide who is magic-aware but not obviously so would be useful
(11:02:53 PM) dkap: Indeed. Sounds like a plan.
(11:03:00 PM) Cagliostro: anything else?
(11:05:23 PM) dkap: *yawns* Tonight? I'm not sure.
(11:05:30 PM) Caelin: HEh
(11:05:30 PM) dkap: Tis already past 11 ...
(11:05:41 PM) dkap: And although we didn't actually get run-time in, we did build well.
(11:05:53 PM) Caelin: Indeed.
(11:06:52 PM) dkap: And you have a better feel for your visitors, information you would have had from the resettlement team.
(11:07:04 PM) Cagliostro: true
(11:07:15 PM) Cagliostro: is the resettlement team sticking around, or heading out, or contactable?
(11:08:23 PM) dkap: Sticking around until you give them the go-ahead to leave, some more ... obvious than others (Hamster Eric for example).
(11:09:01 PM) dkap: Mouseferatu negotiated to be the sane side of contact for Norton in the Courts. He would be happy to either give you a magical token, or accept one from you, either way.
(11:09:55 PM) Cagliostro: give would be acceptable
(11:10:13 PM) Cagliostro: and then I'll spend a while puzzling out the whole thing to make sure it doesn't do anything extra ;)
(11:11:22 PM) dkap: *grin* It does do something extra, it provides a locus, in case he ever wants to pop in, unannounced.
(11:11:35 PM) dkap: But you won't discover that until about the 3rd day of your research.
(11:13:29 PM) Cagliostro: but not only will I learn how to fix it, I'll learn how to duplicate that
(11:14:18 PM) Cagliostro: naturally, until I understand it, I won't keep the contact inside Cagliostro
(11:19:45 PM) Cagliostro: okay, sounds like we're wrapped?
(11:20:03 PM) Caelin: Are we?
(11:22:44 PM) dkap: We can be wrapped.
(11:22:54 PM) Caelin: Okay. good night, folks!
(11:22:58 PM) dkap: Yes, I think that is a good place to wrap, and I'm doing that long-blink thing, so ...
(11:22:58 PM) Caelin left the room (quit: EOF from client).
(11:23:07 PM) Cagliostro left the room.
