(08:24:30 PM) The topic for #dkap_amber is: Game as usual, logs at: https://www.train-wreck.org/~dkap/Amber/logs/ ; wiki-wiki at: https://www.rebel.org/wiki/
(08:24:41 PM) dkap: Blearg. Trials untold, indeed.
(08:25:56 PM) Mistress_Janice: They actually took you to court?
(08:28:11 PM) dkap: Umm ... trials to try and get this ... THING ... working.
(08:28:13 PM) dkap: Bleah.
(08:31:17 PM) Mistress_Janice: When last we left our gallant adventurers, they were staring at the PCs in horror and backing away slowly.
(08:31:42 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(08:32:12 PM) Cagliostro: I believe we had one ring to bind them, as well.
(08:32:15 PM) Cagliostro: and not even into a tree.
(08:32:24 PM) Cagliostro: (Norton bound Sauron into a tree. Long story.)
(08:32:46 PM) dkap: Right then, Count, correct me if I'm wrong, but, the list of trumps had by your Daughter at this, particular juncture is only the "new children" that were picked up on the walkabout? Provided by Darkstar.
(08:33:08 PM) dkap: And then built a hobbit-shooting gun to feed it.
(08:33:12 PM) Cagliostro: I have no idea.
(08:33:23 PM) Auricle: We actually managed the binding, but no one can touch the ring.
(08:33:53 PM) Cagliostro: Definitely provided by Darkstar.
(08:34:04 PM) Cagliostro: But I don't know whether she has a place trump for the Castle, or at least the Shadow.
(08:34:11 PM) Cagliostro: which Darkstar has provided Cagliostro.
(08:34:28 PM) Cagliostro: Or a trump of the Count himself - which I can imagine she would be quite insistent on.
(08:34:51 PM) dkap: Umm ... IIRC you insisted that he _not_ do a trump of you, much less the castle, which you keep changing things on, just in case ...
(08:42:09 PM) Mistress_Janice: *chuckles*
(08:42:32 PM) dkap: Or do I have that wrong?
(08:42:49 PM) dkap: Are there not standing orders to move plants and water-effects on a regular basis, just in case?
(08:45:02 PM) dkap: Right ... I believe we were discussing building a steam-generator or the like with water, the ring, and ... a generator?
(08:45:31 PM) Cagliostro: right, but Mistress janice could have requested a trump of the archives
(08:45:40 PM) Cagliostro: for some reason I thought some people had a trump of me. i'm just as happy not.
(08:45:56 PM) Cagliostro: and yes, there are standing orders to shift things around in the castle
(08:46:03 PM) Cagliostro: but Darkstar has already demonstrated his ability to evade same
(08:46:17 PM) Cagliostro: but at least, she probably has a trump to a basement in Scotland that's kept perfectly pristine
(08:46:42 PM) dkap: Well ... with great effort, and he is the one who gave you the clue that someone spying could simply build one, without your efforts, which was why you went through the effort, I believe?
(08:47:10 PM) dkap: That's true, and maybe some of the mandala-rooms?
(08:48:22 PM) Auricle is now known as Spot
(08:51:56 PM) dkap: But ... ring ... hot. Circumstance ... research.
(08:52:10 PM) Spot: I ain't touching it. I did my part.
(08:52:22 PM) dkap: Typing of which, it's probably time to get information, Mistress_Janice,
(08:53:14 PM) Mistress_Janice: I was checking in my radio, was I not?
(08:53:46 PM) dkap: I don't remember, I thought it was magic-based communications, because you didn't want it to be overheard?
(08:53:54 PM) dkap: But ... I could be wrong.
(08:54:35 PM) Mistress_Janice: Errr... *by* radio, even. But now that you mention it, you did bring up that I call them magically sometimes and they're used to it. So I shall step off a bit to one side and do so.
(08:55:26 PM) dkap: Excellent.
(08:55:42 PM) Mistress_Janice: Did we have a name for any of my assistants?
(08:55:51 PM) ***Mistress_Janice doesn't recall.
(08:56:52 PM) dkap: Information: The land has been owned (and entitled) by the Church. It's part of the cloistered land. There was an incident several hundred years ago, destroying the actual buildings, though.
(08:57:19 PM) dkap: The land has been held (and jealously contested, at times, in the past) by the Church since then.
(08:57:42 PM) dkap: Yes, there is a whole list, somewhere, but I don't remember them, and the person who generated them hasn't responded to my email in a bit ...
(08:57:54 PM) Mistress_Janice: Any details on said incident, or anything at that particular time that might shed light? Was the building we've seen in scrying one of the destroyed landmarks?
(08:58:22 PM) dkap: From the descriptions, the building you were seeing probably was the one that was destroyed.
(08:58:46 PM) dkap: Although your archives do not seem to have any pictures of it. Apparently these weren't painting monks and nuns.
(08:58:52 PM) Mistress_Janice: And what was it? Some generic church?
(09:00:55 PM) dkap: Umm ... some sub-branch of one of the more learning orders that collapsed years and years ago, but the Vatican has been quite adamant about not letting it go, or letting folks be/build/etc there.
(09:03:14 PM) Mistress_Janice: No details on the inident, though?
(09:03:21 PM) Mistress_Janice: Incident. I can type.
(09:05:36 PM) dkap: All the area was wiped out, the Church spent much time tracking down families and paying them condolence calls. Interestingly enough, the makeup of the informing party is the same as what one would need for exorcisims.
(09:08:30 PM) dkap: You have your agent in the Vatican currently looking for any orders pertaining to the land.
(09:08:52 PM) ***Mistress_Janice sighs, thanks the staff, and drops the call. "Father? I think the information we might want on this 'beastie' might be in the Vatican archives." She reels off a list - year, names, the name of the institution. "I presume your contacts are up to the task? My staff came up with a bit, but the Church clearly new more than they were letting on, and your agents are so much more pervasive than mien..."
(09:11:17 PM) ***Cagliostro winces. "I don't have a lot of contacts in the Vatican. We had a falling out a couple of hundred years ago. it involved the Inqusition."
(09:12:33 PM) ***Spot arches his eyebrows.
(09:15:55 PM) Meiglan [~chatzilla@c-24-128-225-7.hsd1.nh.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:16:53 PM) dkap: Meiglan! You made it! Yay!
(09:17:07 PM) Meiglan: it was an adventure. *lol*
(09:17:16 PM) dkap: (We are talking about the Vatican, and the Inquisition.)
(09:17:22 PM) ***Mistress_Janice blinks mildly. "So you let your contacts lapse in one of the most impressive archives of occult information in the world? How... unlike you." She tsks softly, and will wait for her own contacts to come up with what they can get. She tries offering Spot a heavy-duty oven-mitt, the sort they use in foundries.
(09:17:27 PM) dkap: (In game, not out of it ...)
(09:18:33 PM) ***Spot hmms and prods the ring with the oven-mitt to see if it bursts into flames.
(09:18:57 PM) dkap: What's the mitt made out of?
(09:20:43 PM) Mistress_Janice: Hmmm. What *do* they make those out of? Asbestos?
(09:22:55 PM) Cagliostro: "The last time I made contact with the Vatican, it took Napoleon to bail me out."
(09:22:56 PM) dkap: I have no idea, which is why I asked. *grin*
(09:23:18 PM) Mistress_Janice: A moment, lemme dig.
(09:23:42 PM) Cagliostro: kevlar, probably
(09:24:41 PM) Mistress_Janice: Wouldn't kevlar melt? The ones I've seen appear to be treated leather, although I've no idea *what* they're treated with.
(09:25:47 PM) dkap: Treated leather would catch fire.
(09:26:02 PM) Mistress_Janice: Let's try woven asbestos, then.
(09:26:32 PM) dkap: Woven asbestos doesn't catch, just gets _really_ hot after a few moments.
(09:27:17 PM) Delna: Conventional, economic oven mitts are made from materials treated with flame retardant finishes and are suitable for handling intermittent dry heat up to about 200°F (93.3°C). Oven mitts in this category are made from layers of material and insulation
(09:27:21 PM) Delna: Found online
(09:29:01 PM) dkap: Yeah, this is over the boiling point of water (100 C)
(09:29:44 PM) Mistress_Janice: Over 200, though? Or will such a mitt handle it?
(09:31:07 PM) Cagliostro: kevlar degrades at 400 degrees C
(09:31:55 PM) Cagliostro: and it's bulletproof, if you're shot while baking
(09:32:23 PM) Spot: But does it burst into flame in contact with the ring?
(09:35:17 PM) Mistress_Janice: We'll have to engrave runes on it, that only show up when it cools off...
(09:39:19 PM) Spot: I'm just saying spot's not putting on the mitt to pick up the ring unless he knows it won't burst into flame
(09:41:08 PM) ***Cagliostro hands spot a three-foot long stick.
(09:41:27 PM) Cagliostro: "Put the glove on the stick, touch the glove to the stick. If the glove melts, we'll use a different glove."
(09:41:49 PM) ***Spot does as instructed and poke the ring with the glove.
(09:56:25 PM) dkap: Sorry ... sword delivery ...
(09:59:12 PM) Cagliostro: that sounds like either a very useful service for high-level adventurers or a euphemism.
(09:59:13 PM) Cagliostro: possibly both.
(10:00:01 PM) Spot: iiinteresting
(10:00:34 PM) dkap: Well, in fact it's just a sword delivery from a friend of mine who is moving out of state, wants to sell them and I have to clean them up a bit, before they are marketable.
(10:02:42 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: *.net *.split).
(10:04:11 PM) Mistress_Janice: And there goes Father.
(10:04:40 PM) dkap: Twelve chunks of steel, three of them axes.
(10:04:43 PM) dkap: Yay.
(10:05:50 PM) dkap: So, touching them with woven asbestos on the end of a stick doesn't end up in flames.
(10:06:47 PM) ***Spot puts on the mitt and cautiously picks up the ring. "Now what shall we do with it?"
(10:07:20 PM) dkap: It's really hot through the Kevlar, but it's not on fire.
(10:07:50 PM) Mistress_Janice: What can you usually do with spirits bound into items?
(10:08:05 PM) Spot: "Can you magically contain the heat of something?"
(10:10:06 PM) Mistress_Janice: I suppose I can try. Or bend it back on itself...
(10:12:18 PM) dkap: Or use it for something.
(10:14:13 PM) Mistress_Janice: Which was what I was talking about last week, letting it power a turbine or something.
(10:15:57 PM) Delna: Or give it to a hobbit..
(10:15:58 PM) dkap: Indeed. And we have reached loopage ...
(10:17:22 PM) Spot: I ain't got nothing needing powering with it...usually I'd wear something like this, boost my own power, but I'd burst inta flames.
(10:18:10 PM) Cagliostro [~sgorton@c-66-31-32-142.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] entered the room.
(10:18:14 PM) Mistress_Janice: Both Father and I have places that could use it. I'm still more concerned with learning what it is, what it was.
(10:20:30 PM) Cagliostro: hello
(10:21:26 PM) Spot: Mmmmm.
(10:21:28 PM) Mistress_Janice: Welcome back.
(10:21:51 PM) ***Spot holds the ring up in front of him. "Hey you. You want to talk at all?"
(10:22:36 PM) dkap: Spot: the word "destroy" is all you get.
(10:23:00 PM) dkap: And it's not a spoken word, just ... an attitude. "Burn them all" might be closer.
(10:26:54 PM) Spot: "Nope, it just wants to destroy. Mostly just burn. Burning, it seems to like. "
(10:28:25 PM) Mistress_Janice: And the one in the sword just wants to destroy, and the spark that's trapped back where we started just seems to want to cause more problems... I sense a theme.
(10:30:18 PM) Cagliostro: "And not a happy one."
(10:32:05 PM) Mistress_Janice: Not at all. I wonder if this one had it in for the Church, or the Church reacted to what happened.
(10:32:08 PM) dkap: The Gorgon doesn't seem to be that way ...
(10:32:53 PM) Mistress_Janice: But didn't we get the sense that it might've been? I had the impression its attitude had changed during its confinement.
(10:33:57 PM) dkap: Possibly, or possibly the thing containing it was the angry bit?
(10:36:22 PM) Mistress_Janice: Is that what ended up in the sword?
(10:36:39 PM) Cagliostro: no, the thing in the sword was something completely different
(10:36:39 PM) dkap: I believe you folks destroyed it. It was the thing that was the mirror-house.
(10:36:46 PM) dkap: Burned it up, yes?
(10:36:48 PM) Mistress_Janice: Before my time.
(10:36:49 PM) Cagliostro: but yes, the mirror house was a nasty
(10:38:36 PM) Spot: That was very nasty
(10:39:47 PM) Cagliostro: it trapped Delna and Meiglan, and eventually the rest of us found them
(10:39:55 PM) Cagliostro: and it ended up with us burning down the house and freeing the Gorgon
(10:39:59 PM) Cagliostro: so there does seem to be a theme
(10:40:22 PM) Cagliostro: And I dislike the unreasoning nature of the threats.
(10:40:57 PM) Spot: Agreed
(10:41:04 PM) Mistress_Janice: It's one reason I've been trying to look... deeper. Unfortunately, this one seemed to be able to use my scrying as a way to scry us in turn.
(10:41:34 PM) Spot: Not, you know, that I'm upset over burning things or destroying things in general
(10:42:28 PM) Cagliostro: "It is still a form of progress."
(10:42:37 PM) Cagliostro: "We know more about this spirit than we did the last."
(10:44:11 PM) Mistress_Janice: "That's not much at all. Though the Church sent around a team afterward, composed of exorcists, to deal with the victims' families. They were clearly worried it had managed to hide itself somewhere... and I assume they knew a bit more about it, as they seemed prepared."
(10:46:08 PM) Cagliostro: "That is presuming there was only one, though."
(10:46:14 PM) Cagliostro: gm: is anything -else- manifesting in the area?
(10:46:58 PM) dkap: Not at the moment, no.
(10:47:09 PM) dkap: You could do a resonance check or something?
(10:47:27 PM) dkap: Or a summoning, generalized, to catch anything lurking?
(10:47:40 PM) Mistress_Janice: Isn't summoning always a bad idea? :D
(10:48:38 PM) dkap: Wrong game.
(10:48:43 PM) dkap: *grin*
(10:48:46 PM) ***Cagliostro looks like he's getting ready to say something, then doesn't.
(10:48:56 PM) Cagliostro: resonance check seems prudent
(10:49:00 PM) Cagliostro: finding similar energies
(10:49:08 PM) Cagliostro: especially if we could generalize between the sword and the ring
(10:49:27 PM) Spot: Other than angry and destructive
(10:54:35 PM) Cagliostro: well, true
(10:54:41 PM) Cagliostro: magical resonance yadda yadda
(10:56:26 PM) ***Mistress_Janice chuckles. "So, should we hit the sword with the ring, and listen for echoes?"
(10:56:50 PM) Spot: er, no, bad
(10:59:32 PM) Delna: yeah, probably bad
(11:01:12 PM) dkap: They might destroy each other, gang up and destroy you all, or something else. *grin*
(11:02:10 PM) ***Mistress_Janice rolls her eyes. "I was kidding. Father, do you want any aid in doing such a check?"
(11:06:12 PM) Cagliostro: "Certainly. Perhaps a tuning fork?"
(11:06:27 PM) dkap: Or dowsing rod?
(11:06:53 PM) ***Mistress_Janice stretches a bit, trying to conjure a tuning fork out of silver.
(11:07:18 PM) dkap: What note?
(11:08:58 PM) ***Mistress_Janice didn't knew it mattered. C.
(11:09:01 PM) dkap: Meiglan, Spot, on the edge of your hearing there sounds like several people, approaching with haste, probably arriving in, at most 2-3 minutes. Vehicular approach, ground-based. More than one of them.
(11:09:20 PM) Spot: "we've got company coming..."
(11:09:21 PM) dkap: Of course it matters, the more specific your focus, the greater chance of success.
(11:09:56 PM) Mistress_Janice: Focus on what, though? I don't know how to tune something to 'destructive spirits'. Is that F sharp?
(11:11:20 PM) dkap: Well ... what, musically, would you use to indicate anger, or frustration or the like? And should it be a pure resonance, or dissonance?
(11:11:45 PM) Spot: "No, really, vehicles approaching guys...
(11:12:21 PM) Mistress_Janice: You can use anything - but no single note signifies much of anything. And Father asked for a tuning fork, so I presume he wants a resonance.
(11:12:27 PM) Meiglan: "Note the plural in use." Any sign of them coming into view?
(11:12:58 PM) dkap: They should be arriving from the southwest any moment now.
(11:13:06 PM) Cagliostro: some harmonic in common between the ring and the sword
(11:13:27 PM) Cagliostro: to Janice: "How are you at illusionary disguises? I'm kind of terrible at it."
(11:14:28 PM) Mistress_Janice: "I can try, but this fast is not my specialty. Remind me when it's over, and I'll put something together for next time..." (Unless the GM tells me otherwise...)
(11:14:53 PM) dkap: Mistress_Janice: you usually don't bother with disguises, it's easier just to be you.
(11:15:18 PM) Mistress_Janice: And I've never tried disguising anything/one else?
(11:15:48 PM) dkap: Not often. Mostly you are interested in getting beneath disguises, and finding the truth underneath.
(11:16:32 PM) ***Mistress_Janice shakes her head. "Not my direction, Father. I'm better at penetrating them." (replaces last statement)
(11:16:44 PM) dkap: Hrm ... I just noticed the time ... should we hang here, just before the next major encounter?
(11:16:57 PM) Spot: i think so
(11:18:10 PM) dkap: All opposed, sing the Drunken Sailor song, with a verse I've not heard yet. *grin*
(11:18:41 PM) Mistress_Janice: Okay by me. G'night, folks!
(11:18:47 PM) Spot: night!
