(08:20:45 PM) Mistress_Janice: Boogah.
(08:23:26 PM) dkap: Meega.
(08:23:57 PM) Mistress_Janice: Someday, your players will come...
(08:24:21 PM) dkap: Indeed, in the meantime, I'm going to fix something for Katherine, so ... if they show up, let them know I'm not too far behind.
(08:27:52 PM) Mistress_Janice: Hokay.
(08:36:26 PM) dkap: hahaha!
(08:36:31 PM) dkap: i am in control of the machine
(08:36:39 PM) dkap: i am all powerful
(08:36:40 PM) dkap: and bendy
(08:36:41 PM) Cagliostro [~sgorton@12.4.219.2] entered the room.
(08:36:45 PM) dkap: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
(08:36:50 PM) Cagliostro: hello, all.
(08:36:52 PM) dkap: this is bendy
(08:36:58 PM) Cagliostro: on travel this week, somewhat unexpected.
(08:37:08 PM) dkap: i'm working on not getting into trouble while dkap fixes something in the bedroom
(08:37:15 PM) dkap: he will be back shortly
(08:37:37 PM) Cagliostro: a likely story.
(08:37:56 PM) Mistress_Janice: Hello, Count. Auricle has been in touch, she's just come out of surgery, which went well, but she's way too wonked out to come play tonight.
(08:39:01 PM) Cagliostro: good that the surgery went well, but yes, I can imagine that even Auricle can be in too weird of a mental state to play. At least on-line.
(08:43:28 PM) dkap: Indeed. Although, sometimes, it might be hard to tell.
(08:43:29 PM) dkap: *grin*
(08:43:34 PM) dkap: Which is delightful.
(08:44:12 PM) dkap: So, we are just wating on the lovely Elisabella ...
(08:46:46 PM) Mistress_Janice: And then we will FEED!
(08:46:53 PM) ***Mistress_Janice coughs. Ahem.
(09:02:32 PM) Stephie [~Stephie@cpe-76-94-137-134.socal.res.rr.com] entered the room.
(09:03:54 PM) Mistress_Janice: She's here! She's here!
(09:03:58 PM) dkap: Yay!
(09:03:59 PM) Mistress_Janice: GET her!
(09:04:05 PM) dkap: Right, when last we left ...
(09:04:09 PM) ***Mistress_Janice erms. "I mean, welcome, olf course..."
(09:04:21 PM) dkap: Isn't that /GET index.html her?
(09:04:25 PM) Cagliostro: yes...
(09:04:34 PM) dkap: Whoops, my geek is showing.
(09:04:35 PM) Cagliostro: only in HTTP 1.0
(09:04:38 PM) Cagliostro: anyway
(09:05:04 PM) dkap: When last we left our intrepid heroes ...
(09:05:18 PM) Mistress_Janice: ...they were trying desperately to escape the PCs.
(09:05:32 PM) Cagliostro: oh, we had found a trap
(09:05:54 PM) Cagliostro: and I think had disarmed and checked it for useful informaiton, and were continuing on, maintaining a bubble ward
(09:06:29 PM) dkap: Indeed, and there was the notice of the shift of the Flora and Fauna.
(09:06:59 PM) Mistress_Janice: Which Janice thinks is just her unfamiliarity with shadowshifting.
(09:07:05 PM) Stephie: Haha, thanks Janice :)
(09:07:19 PM) Stephie: sorry! we're practicing for a tournament tomorrow (magic the gathering)
(09:08:35 PM) dkap: Level 3?
(09:09:48 PM) Stephie: Hmm?
(09:10:54 PM) dkap: Unfamiliar with shadow-shifting.
(09:11:16 PM) dkap: Mistress_Janice, were you going to describe what is going on?
(09:11:23 PM) dkap: Or just leave it as a mystery.
(09:14:09 PM) Stephie: We were chasing... someone, who had been leaving timed traps with crossbow bolts for us
(09:15:20 PM) dkap: Yes, and in that chase, you had noticed that the Flora and Fauna were ... not as expected.
(09:15:40 PM) dkap: You had commented on the same, and Mistress_Janice was just warming up to her explanation ...
(09:15:44 PM) Mistress_Janice: He lost me with the 'level 3' too. I thought I'd said something at the time... but maybe it was end of session.
(09:18:06 PM) ***Mistress_Janice checks log. "This isn't the same forest. I think you may be reacting to our method of travel..."
(09:24:13 PM) Cagliostro: that was from Janice to Elisabella, yes?
(09:24:46 PM) Mistress_Janice: Yes. Very end of the last log.
(09:27:02 PM) dkap: Yes it was to Stephie.
(09:28:13 PM) Cagliostro: k. can we put a placeholder there for a quick discussion of shadow shifting, and continue on?
(09:28:37 PM) Mistress_Janice: I take it she's wrapped up in her tournament prep.
(09:30:16 PM) dkap: It could very well be.
(09:30:25 PM) dkap: So, you are traveling onward, along the path.
(09:30:39 PM) dkap: There is a growling and thrashing noise up ahead.
(09:31:30 PM) ***Mistress_Janice sighs. "I wonder if something else wandered into one of the traps... or if this is simply the next one."
(09:32:04 PM) Cagliostro: "One way to find out."
(09:32:10 PM) ***Cagliostro indicates that we should continue.
(09:32:11 PM) Mistress_Janice: We press on!
(09:35:30 PM) dkap: There is a large rhino-cat-like thing caught in a bunch of netting that is rapidly getting smaller, and seems to be ... able to cut or burn through the animal's outer layers.
(09:36:08 PM) Cagliostro: gm: Can I use a ward to protect the rhinocat from the netting?
(09:36:49 PM) dkap: You might need to actually cut the strands, they are already below the surface in some places, and it's thrashing itself to death.
(09:36:53 PM) ***Mistress_Janice looks about for other such nets, so as to avoid stepping in one.
(09:37:04 PM) dkap: You could always just deconjure it ...
(09:37:33 PM) dkap: Mistress_Janice: you notice the edges of one, up ahead, between you and the rhino-cat.
(09:37:55 PM) Cagliostro: dkap: true, but I want to analyze the net
(09:38:17 PM) dkap: Conveniently, there is another ...
(09:38:20 PM) ***Mistress_Janice cautions, "Careful, there's another one between us and it."
(09:38:25 PM) dkap: And a third just beyond the rhino-cat.
(09:38:28 PM) Cagliostro: ah, in that case, yes, I will deconjure that
(09:38:47 PM) Cagliostro: and put up a ward between the cat and the other nets, so that it does not pull a Sideshow Bob and go from one trap to the next
(09:39:07 PM) dkap: The rhino-cat thrashes another second or two, lets out a piteous whimper, and then flops to the ground and starts licking it's wounds.
(09:39:26 PM) dkap: It does not pull a Sideshow Bob (whatever that is.)
(09:39:49 PM) Cagliostro: gm: heal the cat somewhat.
(09:39:55 PM) Cagliostro: does it seem to be sapient?
(09:40:10 PM) ***Stephie attempts to dress the rhino-cat's wounds, if it appears amiable enough
(09:41:15 PM) dkap: It seems to be healing very quickly, much like Zach did.
(09:41:34 PM) dkap: It might be sapient, or sentient, or at least, semi-intelligent.
(09:41:40 PM) dkap: It knew when it was no longer attacked.
(09:41:51 PM) ***Mistress_Janice looks to the sides of the trail. Any more nets, or something else to catch those who avoid these?
(09:42:39 PM) dkap: Nope, just three nets, right along the shadow path. Just like the three cross-bow setups.
(09:42:47 PM) Cagliostro: once the cat is healed, I want to try to figure out how they work
(09:42:51 PM) Cagliostro: if such is easy
(09:43:00 PM) Cagliostro: if it's trickier, I want to harvest them for later study
(09:44:28 PM) dkap: The nets are sharp (barbed) exude some sort of sticky acid, and their fibers want to contract (perhaps, not to infinity, but to a solid bag of sorts ...)
(09:44:35 PM) dkap: And the fibers are extremely tough.
(09:45:00 PM) Cagliostro: (this is what I, not Cagliostro, was referencing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFc9Buyul6w )
(09:45:08 PM) Cagliostro: (the sideshow bob moment, that is)
(09:46:16 PM) Stephie: (i do have to run afterall, i'm sorry!! next week, promise)
(09:46:29 PM) Mistress_Janice: Good luck int he tournament!
(09:46:43 PM) Stephie: thank you :) have fun, everyone!
(09:46:50 PM) Stephie left the room (quit: Quit: zzzzz).
(09:47:27 PM) Cagliostro: gm: so these are perhaps more conjuration toys?
(09:47:33 PM) Cagliostro: or just natural plant fibers?
(09:48:56 PM) dkap: Well ... you aren't sure they are natural, and probably not natural to here ... but ... they didn't feel conjured.
(09:49:14 PM) Cagliostro: all right
(09:49:22 PM) Cagliostro: so can I clip and save them safely for later study?
(09:50:28 PM) Mistress_Janice: Some people collect coupons, but *my* Dad...
(09:51:00 PM) dkap: You could probably tickle them, and then, as they reduce to a bag, take that ... and not need a clipping.
(09:51:26 PM) Mistress_Janice: They do seem to be of a sort that would go nicely alongside thorn weapons.
(09:51:32 PM) Cagliostro: well, but if I do that, I'll trigger them
(09:51:40 PM) Cagliostro: and I want to collect them ina n untriggered state
(09:51:49 PM) Cagliostro: in case there's something magic or conjury going on.
(09:52:54 PM) dkap: Ahh ... but clipping one might set it off, or cause it to unravel or something.
(09:55:05 PM) Cagliostro: right.
(09:55:17 PM) Cagliostro: that's what I was trying to figure out; a way to clip them without triggering them
(09:55:29 PM) Cagliostro: which might involve a zero-g ward bubble, if such is possible to set up and move
(09:56:53 PM) dkap: It's an idea ... and tryable ...
(09:57:15 PM) ***Cagliostro will try it
(09:57:19 PM) Cagliostro: I have a backup net at this point
(09:59:10 PM) dkap: The zero-g bubble scoops around the net, but, it does collapse when it shifts into zero-g.
(10:00:22 PM) ***Mistress_Janice suggests, "Leave the other one in situ, perhaps fenced in, and come back for it later?"
(10:01:26 PM) dkap: The bag eventually formed (in about a minute, with no resistance) is about messenger-bag sized. When spread out, it covers about a 15'^2 area.
(10:01:36 PM) dkap: Quite a bit of compression.
(10:01:57 PM) dkap: And no, you didn't notice any magical emminations when it went off.
(10:02:02 PM) ***Cagliostro hms.
(10:02:07 PM) Cagliostro: "Good point".
(10:02:20 PM) Cagliostro: gm: ward around the second one, not touching it or damaging its environment, and head off.
(10:03:01 PM) Cagliostro: make the ward very easy to magically dispel, though, to throw off anyone who comes across it. And if I can make a cross-shadow sensor to it being dispelled, I will, but I've never done that, so I don't know if I can.
(10:03:05 PM) Cagliostro: so - experiment, then continue!
(10:03:46 PM) dkap: No cross-shadow sensor, really.
(10:04:24 PM) Cagliostro: okay, then never mind and continue.
(10:04:24 PM) dkap: Especially since it would give a subtle user a beacon to wherever you might be.
(10:04:31 PM) Cagliostro: oh good point.
(10:05:47 PM) Mistress_Janice: Onward!
(10:06:19 PM) dkap: Are you taking the bag?
(10:06:36 PM) Cagliostro: yes, about the bag
(10:06:41 PM) Mistress_Janice: Pet the kitty on our way by.
(10:06:49 PM) Cagliostro: protectively contained for the acid etc
(10:07:31 PM) dkap: The acid is all on the inside, digesting away anything that might have been in it.
(10:07:47 PM) dkap: The kitty appreciates the pets, and follows you.
(10:08:40 PM) ***Cagliostro hms at the bag.
(10:08:56 PM) Cagliostro: and we continue.
(10:09:13 PM) dkap: Were it a natural plant, it would be very venus-fly-trap-ish.
(10:09:39 PM) ***Mistress_Janice will allow for the rhino-kitty as we shift. Might be a useful ally when the next issue crops up.
(10:10:57 PM) dkap: The rhino-kitty has no problem following your shifting.
(10:11:06 PM) dkap: And seems both quite strong, and quite frisky.
(10:11:39 PM) dkap: It's more on the rhino-size of things, it's got the heavy-skin, and short fur, though the fur is more spiky than silky.
(10:11:56 PM) dkap: But it's definitely got a cat's morphology.
(10:13:33 PM) ***Mistress_Janice engages in her own simple conjuration, making a wet slab or two of meat for it, so it doesn't have to look at us as a larder.
(10:15:24 PM) dkap: It tears off a bit of it, starfs it down, and then tears off other pieces and lays them at your (Mistress_Janice's) feet.
(10:15:57 PM) Mistress_Janice: Ahh, offerings. Pet the kitty, and continue the shadowtracking.
(10:17:32 PM) dkap: The rhino-kitty bounds around, back and forth, occasionally bursting into the woods, and coming back with alarmingly-big live prey in it's mouth, and also gives that to Mistress_Janice.
(10:18:10 PM) ***Cagliostro fails to interfere with Janice and her new friend.
(10:18:57 PM) ***Mistress_Janice tries to stay on mission, but will play with the rhino-kitty somewhat. Try not to get too discommoded by live offerings.
(10:22:27 PM) dkap: Often they will sit, and quiver for a moment, and then scurry off, except for the one that seems to have been played with a little too hard, many (very fragile) broken bones in the bird/lizard like thing.
(10:23:24 PM) Mistress_Janice: On mission! Track! Good kitty, yes, it's very nice, no, I'm not going to eat it. But thank you.
(10:24:28 PM) Cagliostro: gm: heal the bird/lizard when the cat is distracted, then dump it off safely before shifting on.
(10:24:30 PM) dkap: You are warded for the next diversion that happens, so the flames that shoot up all around you (doesn't smell like much of anything, so probably natural gas of some sort) are on the outside of the ward.
(10:25:29 PM) dkap: The triggering device seems to be simply a candle, burned through the cord holding it up, and dropping to ignite the gas.
(10:25:43 PM) dkap: You can heal it, yes.
(10:25:57 PM) Cagliostro: so again, timing-based?
(10:25:58 PM) ***Mistress_Janice complains, "The timing is *too* damned good. Like we're following a precognitive..."
(10:26:03 PM) Cagliostro: "Indeed."
(10:27:07 PM) dkap: There is one scorch-mark, and one candle still burning, a bit further along ...
(10:27:33 PM) ***Mistress_Janice sends a light gust of wind to blow it out and knock it over.
(10:27:33 PM) dkap: None of these have magic or anything similar, but pure physical triggers ... so far.
(10:28:03 PM) dkap: It's out, and the residual heat does not set off the next gas-gout.
(10:28:46 PM) ***Cagliostro hms.
(10:28:49 PM) Cagliostro: "Shall we continue?"
(10:29:04 PM) Cagliostro: "Unlessthere's a way we can skip ahead..."
(10:30:23 PM) dkap: It's somewhat obvious that this has been here for a while. The gas-jets are right along the path, as if they were in a known location before the path was dragged across. The candles and string are somewhat weathered, as if they were stashed here, waiting for need.
(10:31:53 PM) ***Cagliostro hms.
(10:32:02 PM) Mistress_Janice: "Perhaps we're getting close."
(10:32:22 PM) Cagliostro: "Or perhaps we're going down a previously prepared false trail."
(10:32:27 PM) Cagliostro: "Still, it's educational."
(10:32:34 PM) ***Mistress_Janice looks over the gas jets. Any particular tech level, any identifiable style?
(10:33:40 PM) dkap: They are natural rock fissures.
(10:33:43 PM) dkap: Not tech at all.
(10:35:32 PM) Mistress_Janice: Have the triggered ones gone out?
(10:36:02 PM) Cagliostro: I think the gas jets are fairly steady
(10:36:18 PM) Cagliostro: it was the candle plus string that made it into a fire trap
(10:36:37 PM) dkap: Indeed.
(10:37:11 PM) dkap: And the imposition of the ward that cause what would have been a flaming fountain to go back out, deprived of oxygen.
(10:37:23 PM) dkap: Although, you don't know what caused the other to go out.
(10:41:47 PM) Cagliostro: meh. we nee dto catch up with this guy
(10:41:49 PM) ***Mistress_Janice snorts. "Candles. At least the acid nets waited for us - these things, and the first ones, those 'mortars'... If we'd come this way when we hit this trail, we would have passed them before they'd been set to go off. But these are *perfectly* timed. I think we're being toyed with."
(10:43:04 PM) Cagliostro: "But aren't you curious how he's doing it?"
(10:43:24 PM) Cagliostro: "If we have other avenues to travel, I'm open to suggestions, but this is somewhat interesting."
(10:46:06 PM) Mistress_Janice: "I'm curious, yes - but I'm worried, too. He was taken for *you*, Father. And if we're this easily predicted... we're in real trouble."
(10:48:17 PM) dkap: (Reminder, he was taken for "someone familiar, who is an authority figure".)
(10:48:17 PM) Cagliostro: "I wonder if it's actually foretelling - leaving those traps against us, precisely timed to trigger when we arrive, and then totally fail? Something seems off with that amount of psychic vision."
(10:48:56 PM) Mistress_Janice: GM: Wasn't that our later interpretation? The first indication we had was, "Didn't you just come through here?"
(10:52:48 PM) Cagliostro: (that is our later interpretation)
(10:53:12 PM) Cagliostro: (but part of that was because Cagliostro read the guard's mind, and noticed that the vision of 'Cagliostro' didn't look anything like the actual Count)
(10:53:45 PM) Mistress_Janice: "Perhaps then this is just another distraction. What's going on that we're not catching, because we're off on this wild goose chase?"
(10:55:32 PM) Cagliostro: "Good question. Zach?"
(10:55:44 PM) Cagliostro: and I think that's my cue to go turn into a pumpkin
(10:56:43 PM) dkap: Pumpkin time, it is.
(10:56:57 PM) Cagliostro left the room (quit: Quit: Leaving.).
(10:57:01 PM) dkap: And we can leave Mistress_Janice foaming at the mouth until next week.
(10:58:12 PM) Mistress_Janice: ARGH!
(10:58:18 PM) ***Mistress_Janice foams.
(10:58:29 PM) Mistress_Janice: Thank you anyway. :D
(10:59:05 PM) dkap: Of course.
(10:59:25 PM) Mistress_Janice left the room (quit: Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.86 [Firefox 3.6.13/20101203075014]).
